Steel Drums: The Music & History

Steel Drums: The Music & History In-Person

Experience and enjoy the soothing island sounds of the steel drum with musician, teacher, steel drum maker and tuner, David Gettes.

David's performative presentation will explore the history of the steel drum and the instruments that led to it, including the African Djembe and native plant bamboo. He will demonstrate several instruments and showcase a variety of musical genres from rock to reggae, calypso to jazz. David will also be taking your questions and song requests throughout the program.

David Gettes is a leading figure in the steel drum art form with his band, Trinidad North, performing and lecturing throughout the United States on the musical, social and technical evolution of the instrument.
